Another successful grape harvest for Magda Pedrini of La Giustiniana estate of Piedmont in Italy

The Italian art of luxury, elegance and good taste

Magda Pedrini heads La Giustiniana winery, an estate of 110 hectares with grapes grown on 40 hectares. The grapes are a unique variety of Cortese grapes used to produce certified white wines.

Situated in the northern Italian region of Piedmont, the estate boasts an ancient tradition of quality wine-making categorized as D.O.C.G. (controlled and guaranteed denomination of origin) has been producing wine since 1250 when it was run by Benedictine monks who made sacramental wine.

Today, Magda Pedrini wines are cultivated using traditional methods. The wines have reduced sulphite levels, using only the minimum needed to guarantee a long life for the wine.

Due largely to the efforts of the estate workers, this year has seen a successful grape harvest despite the challenges of the past two years. In recognition of their hard work, Ms. Pedrini has hosted the traditional elegant gala dinner for all her employees, grape collectors and their families in the palatial neoclassical villa built in the 17th century. The villa has been extensively and elegantly renovated by Ms. Pedrini.

At La Giustiniana, she produces aristocratic wines, including the distinctive Montessora and Lugarara, both of which are excellent with appetizers, oysters, fish and main courses. The local vintners produce the famous Cortese di Gavi, or simply Gavi, the smooth white dry wine, sometimes with a subtle aftertaste of bitter almonds coveted by the most discerning connoisseurs, collectors and high-end restaurants all over the world.

Ms. Pedrini also owns the world-class estate, Magda Pedrini Cà da Meo, located in Pratolungo di Gavi. This territory was mentioned in historical records as far back as 1632. At this estate, Ms. Pedrini produces the signature wines: Gavi D.O.C.G “Magda”, “Magda Pedrini” Brut Spumante, and an excellent red “Il Pettirosso” by Magda Pedrini. All these wines are a perfect complement to a ravioli dish. Locally it is a highly respected tradition to cover a healthy portion of unseasoned ravioli with red or white wine.

According to legend, during the 12th century, an inn in Gavi was famous for a particular dish, a stuffing made of herbs, eggs, cheese and minced meat carefully arranged onto pasta sheets. The inn was owned by the Raviolo family, who gave their name to the dish, ravioli, that is today, together with wine, a speciality of the city of Gavi.
